What do you call a group of baby alligators? A pod!
This group of 14 super cute little guys was found basking in the sun along the spring’s edge.
See all those little black dots along their jaw line? Can you count them? Gators can effectively hear with their skin! Zoom in to see the baby gators’ integumentary sensory organs (ISOs) - the little black dots around their jaw. These are hyper sensitive pressure and vibration detectors (mechanoreceptors), capable of sensing disturbances as small as 0.1 microns!
I love the colors and stripes of baby gators! These eventually fade as they mature, but offer a distinct camouflage advantage while young, allowing them to blend in better with marsh grasses and the dappled changing light of the springs. But wait! There’s more: the stripes are a great example of environmental impact on phenotype. Nest temperature influences not only hatchling sex but also stripe patterns - cooler incubation temperatures result in more stripes and darker heads. Early environment also helps shape their stripes and coloration, where lighter environments lead to lighter alligators. Wow!
